1-15 January 2024 Cyber Attacks Timeline

I am back with the first timeline of 2024, with some changes: ransomware counted as a specific attack technique, and an optimization of the sources. With this new methodology I collected 116 events, and for the first time, the threat landscape was dominated by account takeovers, a consequence of the numerous crypto scams that have flooded X (previously Twitter), ahead of Ransomware and malware (16.4%), and exploitation of vulnerabilities (9.5%).

16-31 December 2023 Cyber Attacks Timeline

The last cyber attacks timeline of 2023 revealed a decrease in events (120 events down from 140 of the previous timeline), and this trend extended to lower ransomware and malware rates. There were a few mega breaches, and some events in the cryptocurrency sector. Cyber espionage and hacktivism remained prominent, influenced by Iranian and Russian groups.

The second cyber attack timeline of September 2023 showed a decrease in events and a continuation of malware attacks. Massive hacks targeted fintech organizations like Mixin Network, and some breaches affected millions of individuals. The timeline also includes activities by various known and new threat actors.

The first cyber attack timeline of September 2023 reveals a record-breaking 13.93 events/day, a worrying increase from August's downward trend. Ransomware and malware attacks continue to be prevalent, making up 39.7% of the threat landscape, a rise from 34.5%. The impact of vulnerabilities remains vital, but it's in decline. Fintech is under significant pressure, with malicious actors breaching CoinEX and Stake.com, stealing large amounts of crypto assets. Numerous organizations, such as Freecycle, Pizza Hut Australia, and Traderie, fell victim to extensive data breaches.
