After the cyber attacks timelines (part I and part II), it’s time to publish the statistics for April 2024 where I collected and analyzed 215 events.

During April 2024 Cyber Crime continued to lead the Motivations with a value (73%) practically equal to March when it was 72.9%. Operations driven by Cyber Espionage ranked at number two with 14.4%, again a value very close to 13.3% recorded in March, and once again ahead of Cyber Warfare (5.6% vs 5.9% in March) and Hacktivism (4.7% vs 2.5%).

Malware led the Attack Techniques with 22.8% (it was 18.7% in March) followed by Ransomware (19.1% vs 13.8% in March) and Targeted Attacks (9.3%). The Exploitation of Vulnerabilities dropped at rank #5 with 8.8% from 14.8%). And as always, bear in mind that the high number of events of Unknown origin is due to the fact that in many cases, a ransomware attack is reported by the targeted organizations as a generic outage, without providing details of the incident.

The Distribution of Targets was led again by Multiple Organizations with 30.2% from 31%, ahead of Healthcare (11.2%) and Governments (10.7%).

Check out the interactive charts and the statistics, also available as an infographic. And please support my work, sharing the content, and of course follow @paulsparrows on X (formerly Twitter,) or even connect on Linkedin, or Mastodon for the latest updates for the latest updates.

As always bear in mind that the sample refers exclusively to the attacks included in my timelines, available from public sources such as blogs and news sites. Obviously the sample cannot be complete, but only aims to provide an high level overview of the threat landscape.
