After the cyber attacks timelines (part I and part II), it’s time to publish the statistics for March 2024 where I collected and analyzed 203 events.

During March 2024 Cyber Crime continued to lead the Motivations chart with 72.9%. Operations driven by Cyber Espionage ranked at number two with 13.3%, ahead of Cyber Warfare (5.9%) and Hacktivism (2.5%).

Malware led the Attack Techniques chart with 18.7%, followed by the exploitation of Vulnerabilities (14.8%), and Ransomware (13.8%), which often uses the exploitation of software flaws as an initial access vector. And of course, bear in mind that the high number of events of Unknown origin is due to the fact that in many cases, a ransomware attack is reported by the targeted organizations as a generic outage, without providing details of the incident.

The Distribution of Targets was led again by Multiple Organizations with 31%ahead of Governments (15.8%) and attacks directed to Individuals (7.4%).

Check out the interactive charts and the statistics, also available as an infographic. And as always, please support my work, sharing the content, and of course follow @paulsparrows on X (formerly Twitter,) or even connect on Linkedin, or Mastodon for the latest updates for the latest updates.

As always bear in mind that the sample refers exclusively to the attacks included in my timelines, available from public sources such as blogs and news sites. Obviously the sample cannot be complete, but only aims to provide an high level overview of the threat landscape.
