After the cyber attacks timelines (part I and part II), it’s time to publish the statistics for February 2024 where I collected and analyzed 239 events.

During February 2024 Cyber Crime continued to lead the Motivations chart with 68.6%. Operations driven by Cyber Espionage ranked at number two with 16.7%, ahead of Cyber Warfare (4.6%) and Hacktivism (3.3%).

Malware led the Attack Techniques chart with 25.1% ahead of Ransomware (16.3%) and the exploitation of vulnerabilities (13.4%), an initial access vector that is often used by ransomware operations. As always, bear in mind that the high number of events of Unknown origin is due to the fact that in many cases, a ransomware attack is reported by the targeted organizations as a generic outage, without providing details of the incident.

The Distribution of Targets was led again by Multiple Organizations with 28.8%ahead of Governments (14.2%) and Healthcare (8.8%).

Check out the interactive charts and the statistics, also available as an infographic. And as always, please support my work, sharing the content, and of course follow @paulsparrows on X (formerly Twitter,) or even connect on Linkedin, or Mastodon for the latest updates for the latest updates.

As always bear in mind that the sample refers exclusively to the attacks included in my timelines, available from public sources such as blogs and news sites. Obviously the sample cannot be complete, but only aims to provide an high level overview of the threat landscape.
