After the cyber attacks timelines (part I and part II), it’s time to publish the statistics for January 2024 where I collected and analyzed 288 events. As I mentioned in a previous post the direct comparison with the data of January 2023 is not correct since starting from January 2024, I optimized the sources, and I also decided, in the attack techniques chart, to differentiate malware and ransomware as two different techniques.

That being said, looking at the data, Cyber Crime continued to lead the Motivations chart with a percentage that was above 80% (81.9% precisely). Operations driven by Cyber Espionage ranked at number two with 6.3%, ahead of Hacktivism (3.8%) and Cyber Warfare (2.8%).

The Attack Techniques chart was led by Ransomware with 18.1% among the known techniques, ahead of Malware with 16%. The podium is completed  by Attack Takeovers with 12.2%. The only remaining technique with double digit is the exploitation of Vulnerabilities, at place number four with 11.1%. Of course the high number of Unknown is due to the fact that in many cases the targeted organizations report a generic outage, most of all in case of ransomware attacks, without providing details of the incident.

The Distribution of Targets was led again by Multiple Organizations with 27.8%ahead of Governments (12.2%) and Healthcare (9.4%).

Check out the interactive charts and the statistics, also available as an infographic. And as always, please support my work, sharing the content, and of course follow @paulsparrows on X (formerly Twitter,) or even connect on Linkedin, or Mastodon for the latest updates for the latest updates.

As always bear in mind that the sample refers exclusively to the attacks included in my timelines, available from public sources such as blogs and news sites. Obviously the sample cannot be complete, but only aims to provide an high level overview of the threat landscape.
