After the cyber attacks timelines (part I and part II), it’s time to publish the statistics of December 2023 where I collected and analyzed 260 events, a sharp decrease from the 390 events of November.

As usual, Cyber Crime leads the Motivations with 75.4%, more than three points down from 78.7% of November, and once again lower than 80% (for the fifth month in a row.) Operations driven by Cyber Espionage went slightly up to 10.4% from 9.7%, while Hacktivism gained nearly two points, up to 7.3% from 5.4%. Eleven events were characterized by Cyber Warfare with a percentage that doubled, for the third month to a row, to 4.2% from 2.1%.

The Attack Techniques chart is led by Malware with 38.5%, down from 42.1%, while attacks carried out through the exploitation vulnerabilities confirmed their decreasing trend at place number four, down to 6.9% from 11.3%. Place number two is occuped by Account Takeovers, back in the podium with 9.2%, up from 5.4%, while the third place among the known techniques is taken by  Targeted Attacks up to 8.5% from 7.2%.

The Distribution of Targets is led again by Multiple Organizations up to 20% from 17.7%, once again ahead of Healthcare up to 16.9% from 14.1%, and individual targets with 7.7%

Check out the interactive charts and the statistics, also available as an infographic. And as always, please support my work, sharing the content, and of course follow @paulsparrows on X (formerly Twitter,) or even connect on Linkedin, or Mastodon for the latest updates for the latest updates.

As always bear in mind that the sample refers exclusively to the attacks included in my timelines, available from public sources such as blogs and news sites. Obviously the sample cannot be complete, but only aims to provide an high level overview of the threat landscape.
