I have aggregated the statistics created from the cyber attacks timelines published in the second quarter of 2023. In total I have collected 1040 events (11.43 events/day), a 9.8% increase compared to the 947 events of the previous quarter, but most importantly, a 25% increase compared to Q2 2022 when I collected 694 events).

Cyber crime continues to lead the Motivations chart but its percentage drops to 76.8% from 82.9%, of the previous quarter. On the other hand, events driven by Cyber Espionage grew to 10.2% from 8.4% of the previous quarter.

Similarly, malware continues to lead the Attack Techniques chart with 33% down from 38.7% of the previous quarter (but remember that the real percentage could be higher since in too many cases unconfirmed ransomware attacks are indicated as generic outages, and they fall into the Unknown category). The massive exploitation of the MOVEit CVE-2023-34362 vulnerability pushed events driven by the exploitation of software flaws at rank number two among the known techniques with 16.3% from 10.8% (but the two attack vectors are tightly related since, the exploitation of vulnerabilities is aimed, in almost all cases, to install malware.

The Target Distribution chart confirms Multiple industries at the first place with 19% from 22.9% of the previous quarter

The statistics are also available as an infographic.

As always bear in mind that the sample refers exclusively to the attacks included in my timelines, available from public sources such as blogs and news sites. Obviously the sample cannot be complete, but only aims to provide an high level overview of the threat landscape.
