After the cyber attacks timelines (part I and part II), it’s time to publish the statistics of May 2023 where I have collected and analyzed 335 events, a number that shows a slight decrease compared to April (341 events) but that also confirms the overall high level of activity that is characterizing this troubled 2023.

Cyber Crime leads the Motivations chart with a percentage slightly higher than April (78.51%  vs. 75.1%), but again, below 80% for the second month in a row. The operations driven by Cyber Espionage are down to 9.25% from 12.3% and back to the values of April, while Hacktivism is also down to 4.78% from 7.6%. Cyber Warfare records 14 events bringing its percentage to 4.18% from 2.3%.

Malware is always on top of the Attack Techniques, with 39.7% up from 35.5% of April, ahead of Account Takeovers with 13.13% (up from 8.2%) and Vulnerabilities down to 8.66% from  12%.

The Target Distribution chart is led, once again, by campaigns against Multiple Organizations up to 24.18% from 19.6%, ahead of Healthcare (13.1%) and Individuals with 10.7%.

Check out the interactive charts and the statistics, also available as an infographic.

As always bear in mind that the sample refers exclusively to the attacks included in my timelines, available from public sources such as blogs and news sites. Obviously the sample cannot be complete, but only aims to provide an high level overview of the threat landscape.
