EVENTS/DAY

Similarly to the previous quarters, I have aggregated the statistics created from the cyber attacks timelines published in Q3 2021, derived from 568 events (6.17 events per day), a noticeable decrease from the 628 events (6.9 events per day), collected and analyzed inĀ  Q2. Normally the Summer leads to a slowdown of the cyber activity and this year was no exception.

Despite the apparent Summer break, the number of events collected so far in the first 9 months of 2021 is overshadowing the previous years, confirming nearly a 20% growth year over year.

Unsurprisingly cyber crime continues to lead the Motivations chart with 81.7% (it was 87.6% in Q1 2021.) Malware continues to lead the Attack Techniques chart decreasing to 40.7% from 45.9% (but one must consider that too many ransomware attacks appear as “Unknown”.) Multiple industries lead the Target DistributionĀ chart with 21,7% from 17.7%.

The statistics are also available as an infographic.

As always bear in mind that the sample refers exclusively to the attacks included in my timelines, available from public sources such as blogs and news sites. Obviously the sample cannot be complete, but only aims to provide an high level overview of the threat landscape.
