I can finally publish the statistics derived from the cyber attacks timelines of August (Part I and Part II). This month I have collected 160 events, a small decrease in comparison with July when the total was 168 events.
The Daily Trend of Events chart shows a clear peak at the beginning, while during the rest of the month the overall level is essentially stable (with clear breaks during the weekend).
Nothing new under the sun of the Motivations Behind Attacks chart where Cyber Crime ranks on top with 82.6%, continuing its increasing trend from 81.7% of July. Cyber Espionage drops to 11.2 from 16%. Both Cyberwarfare and Hacktivism show a plus sign to 3.7% and 2.5% respectively from the value of 1.2% recorded in July for the two categories.
As always, malware leads the known Attack Techniques chart, but its percentage plunges to 32.5% from 46.2%. Account Hijackings jump to number two with 19.4% from 13.6%, and swap their position with targeted attacks that slide at 11.9% from 14.8%.
At least there is a change in the Distribution of Targets chart, where the attacks directed against multiple industries take the lead with 18.8%. Attacks against individuals are stable at number two with 18.1% (it was 18.9% in July). Governments (and public administrations in general) were not particulary hit this month and they rank “only” at number three with 13.1% (in July they were at number one with 20.7%).
That’s all for today and, as always, bear in mind that the sample refers exclusively to the attacks included in my timelines, aiming to provide an high level overview of the “cyber landscape”.
